DAIKIRAI FUSHIGI YUUGI
(hating Fushigi Yuugi)
Are You a sensitive FY fan? Well, better
go back and stop reading this article. The following selection is just
an opinion by Maria Verona Eloriaga. So it shouldn't be taken personally
Visually pleasing? I agree. Yu Watase's art is attractive, to say the least.
Every character--may they be hero, villain or bit parters--comes off as
beautiful.
As Animerica VOl.8, No.12 puts it, FY is the best anime for Boy Watcher.
Personally speaking, I can only take too much beauty. Some may subsist
on bishounen alone but me, if the plot is too flimsy...well, Idon't take
to it like flies to rotting meat.
This brings us now to the series' plot. Forget about the girl-gets- transported-to-another-world...must-find-seven-warriors-to-summon-phoenix
shtick. Let's face it, Fy is about Miaka and Tamahome. Miaka and Tamahome
getting together, Miaka and Tamahome breaking up, Miaka and Tamahomegetting
up together again, ad nauseum.
A fan exasperatedly asked me, "what's so wrong with fighting for love?"
(shudder) Yes, there's nothing rong with it but htere are other, uhm, more
"Tasteful" ways of portraying love. C'mon, you gotta admit, it's a little
too over the top.
Take Miaka and Yui. They both fallin love with the same guy. And in some
cases, yes, even friends would fight over the guy. But geez, would you
plot to have your best friend offed just to get the guy?!? She's your best
friend since kindergarten, for chrissakes!
Now we get to Miaka and Tamahome (again), it was already established
that the couple is in love and would do anything to see taht this love
succeeds. Viewers could already discern that early on , there's no need
to throw around every conceivable obstacle---short of revealing that Miaka
and Tamahome are actually siblings----to their relationship. Can you actually
count the number of times they broke up with the fingers of your hand?
see?
And what is with that "I have to stay a virgin so I have to break up with
you" fiasco? Either miaka doesn't trust herself or she doesn't trust Tamahome.
Can you say shallow? And I thought their love was supreme. tsk...tsk...tsk...
Do i sound a bitter to you? Maybe I am. I actually stayed with the series
till the end. I even watched all the OAV's. It left me feeling betrayed.
I feel it has so much wasted potential, er, plot lines. Ancient Chinese
history, cross-dimesional and temporal conflicts, chonese philosophy and
astrology. Yes, these were tackled... but not to the extent I would have
liked. They became secondary to the MIaka and Tamahome soap opera, er,
love story. Also, the action scenes left much to be desired. These shichiseishi
are supposed to be the most skilled earriors in the land, where is the
blood-shed? Or at the very least, where's the enaging sword-play? *sigh!*
Speaking of the fighting , the heroine -Miaka - hangs out with all
these warriors and she doesn't even learn a little bit of fighting skill
from them. But geez, stay put woman! Don;t you notice that you end up getting
rescued all the time, thereby causing more trouble for everybody???
This brings us to still another thing. It's no secret that miaka ain't
actually the most popular anime female character (perhaps only rivaling
Usagi and Relena). And it;s not because she's loathsome. She's actually
cheerful, pleasant and well-meaning. However, a lot of fans don't like
her because she eats too much but doesn;t get any pound, she's always in
distress and always has to be rescued, and , well...she's not exactly bright^-^
But for me, she--and the series, as well -- has one saving grace. In the
end, when she was faced with the dillema of choosing between her best friend
and her lover, she chose her friend! Yay!
So what happened to love always triumphs in the end, then? Well, perhaps
MIaka knew that that's why she chose Yui. She knew that Tamahome's love
would be strong enough and they willl be reunited n matter what.. Awwwwww!
Is it enough reason to watch the series? not for jaded little me, isn't
it?
---end---
(your opinion will
be posted for the coming update * If it contains such good meaning)
